Pre-birth Acupuncture

Pre-birth acupuncture is a great way to prepare your body naturally for child birth. Depending on how well your body is progressing in the final trimester, it generally involves a series of at least weekly acupuncture treatments given from week 36 of the pregnancy. Treatments prepare the body by gently:

  • Loosening tendons and ligaments in the pelvic cavity
  • Ripening the cervix to aid cervical dilation
  • Promoting relaxation, reducing stress, and anxiety which helps the body’s oxytocin secretion
  • Boosting energy and nourishing blood stores
  • Facilitating a faster post birth recovery

Feedback by Midwives in New Zealand is that prebirth acupuncture helps to:

  • Reduce mean labour time by up to 2 hours
  • Reduce the chance of medical intervention (medical induction, emergency caesarean, epidural)
  • Increase normal vaginal deliveries
